As I write this it's almost exactly a month until the Findon Valley 5K and 10K (not forgetting the mini-mile for the kids!), events now in their third year and going from strength to strength. The Findon Valley Residents Association marked its 90th anniversary on Sunday 9 August 2026 with a garden party in the community garden, bringing residents, volunteers and friends together for an afternoon of music, refreshments and local pride. The event celebrated much more than a milestone year. It was a chance to recognise the people who keep the Association going, the neighbours who show up when help is needed, and the steady work carried out with good humour throughout

The gas main works at Marshall Avenue/A24 junction have been completed a whole week ahead of schedule! Well done to Jim and his I&G Team. Reinstatement works will continue today and hopefully the traffic lights will be down for the weekend. We were very sad to see that our friends at Merriman Grange had been the subject of a graffiti attack earlier this week, their whole front fence was sprayed, causing not only hundreds of pounds worth of damage but also great distress to the staff and residents. This is the second time they have been targeted. Our PCSO Ed Mitchell is supporting them and investigating this senseless act of criminal damage. Ed Mitchell our PCSO has reported that, with the help of a quick thinking resident, the young driver of a car doing 'donuts' in the Storrington Rise car park late in the evenings has been given a Section 59 Warning Notice and a dressing down, in front of his mother! Ed warns that this behaviour will not be tolerated and unmarked cars will be patrolling. I attended a meeting with SGN, I&G contractors, West Sussex County Council and Elizabeth Sparkes, our local Councillor this morning to feedback our comments regarding the ongoing works on the A24. I was able to emphasize the importance of communication between I&G and the community. I have recently had a meeting with an operative from Bauer Outdoor Media UK, the company that maintains the bus shelters that have advertising on them. They have confirmed that the newest bus shelter opposite Cissbury Court, on the A24 south, is going to get a seat inside but for this to happen they need a permit from WSCC to close part of the road to be able to manoeuvre their vehicles safely. The Findon Valley Local History Group visited Lancing College chapel and crypt for a guided tour with Charles, himself an OL (Old Lanconian) who gave generously of his time to share this beautiful building with us, with lots of anecdotes and fascinating facts. After a pit-stop at Shoreham Airport cafe some of the group then also enjoyed an interesting Tour of the Airport and museum. I met with Jim the I & G contractor this afternoon. Standing at the Mayfield lights made me realise how many drivers are apparently red/green colour blind! Some incredibly dangerous manoeuvres going on and traffic turning out of both sides of Greatham Road, both north and south! The good news is that the Mayfield works are complete and the whole compound will move to inside Hillview Rise this evening to give a traffic light-free weekend. I have received notification from SGN that although works will commence on Monday 13th, on Tuesday 14th the operatives will be off site for mandatory training and will work from 4pm-7pm on that day. I am waiting for confirmation that late working will not be done throughout the project.

We have had a report from a resident that there has been some criminal activity in the Valley. An elderly resident had a piece of jewellery stolen from him by a woman who approached him in the street and another resident has reported that she was called on by two people who identified themselves as police officers. We have also heard reports of parcels being stolen from doorsteps. All these incidents have been reported to the Police and our local PCSO, Ed Mitchell, is dealing
