With the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe day (VE Day) and the ending of World War II hostilities across Europe, we've searched our archives for images of Worthing and the local area during the war.

The gallery below showcases a few pictures of wartime Worthing. You can see the concrete defences along the seafront and the hole blown in the pier to deter enemy incursion.

Other images also show the entrances to the underground air raid shelters on Broadwater Green and in Steine Gardens. The circular structure is actually a reservoir built in Findon Valley in case of enemy bombing of the water supply. It was sited where the library now stands on the corner of Limetree Avenue and Findon Rd. Note it is uncovered! You can also see the concrete defences in Findon Rd.

The lone Home Guard sentinel stood guard on Cissbury to watch out for any signs of enemy invasion.

Join the All Saints Church and FVRA on Monday 5th May at 2pm at the All Saints Church for an 80th Anniversary Celebration!
